Earlier Report Observations

The African wood fuel market grew steadily in volume from 696 million m³ in 2018 to 731 million m³ in 2023. This expansion was primarily driven by increasing total energy demand across the continent, as reported by the African Energy Commission (AFREC), which highlighted wood fuel's role as a key traditional energy source. The intra-African agricultural trade also contributed to sustaining demand for wood fuel in certain regions.

By 2024, the energy landscape began to shift with accelerated investment in renewable technologies and major infrastructure projects in solar and natural gas. These developments, alongside emerging carbon credit markets linked to forest resources, introduced new economic incentives and policy measures aimed at energy security and sustainability, potentially influencing future wood fuel consumption patterns.
