The wood charcoal market in Madagascar started the period at 1 560 thousand tonnes in 2018, a year marked by the inauguration of a new charcoal briquette factory, introducing an alternative product and new production capacity into the sector. However, market volume contracted the following year to 1 465 thousand tonnes.

A recovery and consistent growth phase began from 2020, with the market reaching 1 544 thousand tonnes by 2021. This expansion was supported by the government's suspension of wood charcoal exports to prioritize domestic supply, alongside initiatives to train artisans and develop ecological charcoal production, which added to overall output.

The upward trend continued through 2022 and 2023, with volumes reaching 1 583 thousand tonnes and 1 622 thousand tonnes respectively. This sustained growth was further aided by local entrepreneurs promoting sustainable alternative fuels, which involved processes to produce fuel from waste, contributing to the availability of charcoal products.
