Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, Madagascar's non-coniferous sawnwood production remained steady at around 25 300 m³ annually. The market volume, however, experienced significant shifts due to changes in trade flows. In 2019, high domestic wood consumption and a persistent supply deficit, exacerbated by forest degradation and illegal logging, kept more sawnwood within the country as exports fell sharply, lifting the market volume to over 25 000 m³.

A notable surge occurred in 2020 when the market volume jumped to 40 700 m³. This was primarily driven by a spike in imports, which rose to 15 390 m³. The increase in imports followed a circular note that banned the cutting and exploitation of certain wood species, which, despite insufficient enforcement, constrained local supply and prompted greater reliance on imported sawnwood to meet demand.

After the 2020 peak, imports dropped significantly in 2021, pulling the market volume down to 25 600 m³. In the following two years, imports gradually recovered, reaching 2 566 m³ in 2023, which helped the market volume grow to nearly 28 000 m³ by 2023.
