Earlier Report Observations

The wood charcoal market volume in the Caribbean showed considerable movement between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 93.0 thousand tons, it fell to 79.5 thousand tons in 2019 before surging to 105.3 thousand tons in 2020. Growth continued to 117.0 thousand tons in 2021, followed by a modest dip to 111.8 thousand tons in 2022 and a recovery to 117.3 thousand tons by 2023.

This variability was closely tied to the dynamics of production and trade. Domestic production rose steadily from 195.3 thousand tons to 235.5 thousand tons over the six years, while export volumes experienced significant swings from 105.2 to 120.8 thousand tons. With imports remaining a small factor, the available market volume was predominantly shaped by how much of the increasing production was retained for domestic consumption versus shipped abroad.
