Wood assembled flooring panels market in Hungary

Between 2018 and 2020, the Hungarian market for wood assembled flooring panels in volume terms contracted from 935 thousand m² to 892 thousand m², with a dip to 863 thousand m² in 2019. In value terms, however, the market grew from 18.1 million $ US to 21.5 million $ US, indicating a rise in average prices or a shift towards higher-value products.

Domestic production volume fell from 2.2 million m² in 2018 to 1.9 million m² in 2020. Imports fluctuated significantly, peaking at 336 thousand m² in 2020 before declining to a low of 56 thousand m² in 2024. Exports, a major outlet for Hungarian production, reached a high of 1.5 million m² in 2021 but later decreased to 1.0 million m² by 2025.

By 2022, evolving consumer preferences began shaping the market, including increased demand for eco-friendly and sustainable solutions like natural wood. The introduction of new materials such as bamboo and cork, alongside the growing popularity of underfloor heating which reduced demand for classic parquet, represented key shifts in the competitive landscape.

In 2020, output was valued at 52 826 K $ US, marking a slight decline of 1.5% compared to the previous year. Hungary's production of wood assembled flooring panels declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, 1 855 K m² were produced, which is 13.4% less than in the previous year. Between 2018 and 2020, production decreased by 15.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.6%.

After a two-year decline, wood assembled flooring panel shipments from Hungary to abroad increased. In 2021, exports reached 1 537 K m², which is 18.4% higher than the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports increased by 9.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.0%. The minimum value was recorded in 2020 at 1 299 K m², with the largest decline of 5.6% also occurring in that year.

From 2018 to 2021, wood assembled flooring panels from Hungary were traded with many countries. Even the largest destinations—Italy, Austria, and Germany—together represented only 49.3% of total exports in kind.

Between 2018 and 2021, exports increased by 28.2%, equating to an annualized rate of 8.6%. Volatility characterized the market behavior during these years. Import volumes fell to a trough in 2019 at 98 K m² and peaked in 2020 at 336 K m², with a top-to-bottom ratio of 3.4 times. In 2021, Hungary imported 223 K m² of wood assembled flooring panels, down by 33.7% year-over-year. The largest increase was recorded in 2020 at 244.0%.
