Domestic production also expanded, though it remained a smaller component of the market.

In 2023, the market volume contracted to 82 693 tons, a 7.7% decrease from the peak in 2022. This decline was accompanied by a sharp rise in exports to 7 658 tons and a slight drop in production, while imports stabilized at 77 826 tons.

Whey production in the MENA region grew for the second consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 13 K t, marking a significant increase of 39.6% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 8.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 7 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 41.1%.

Whey production in the MENA region increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 15 883 K $ US, representing a 23.0% rise compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 16.7%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.3%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 9 097 K $ US, which experienced the largest decline of 33.2%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a 42.0% jump.

Exports whey from MENA

Exports in kind, t

After a two-year decline, whey exports from the MENA region increased. In 2020, exports amounted to 4 267 t, showing a moderate improvement of 5.9% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 69.2%, equating to an annualized rate of 32.5%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 4 029 t, while the largest decline occurred in 2018, with a 54.8% drop.

From 2017 to 2020, whey exports from the MENA region were relatively evenly distributed. Pakistan accounted for 19.4% of exports in kind, Mauritania for 6.6%, and Afghanistan for 6.0%, with these three countries together representing only 31.9% of total flows.

Whey export volumes from the MENA region declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports stood at 5 184 K $ US, equivalent to a moderate contraction of 6.7% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 66.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 30.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, whey from the MENA region was traded with numerous countries. Even the largest destinations—Pakistan, Mauritania, and Afghanistan—together accounted for only 23.3% of total exports in value terms.

Imports whey to MENA

Whey imports into the MENA region increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached approximately 71 490 t, representing a 10.3% gain compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 38.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey, France, and Poland were the leading suppliers of whey to the MENA region. Turkey accounted for 29.2% of imports in kind, France for 19.5%, and Poland for 6.5%, with these three countries jointly taking 55.1% of total imports in kind.

Whey import volumes into the MENA region rose for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 92 161 K $ US, reflecting a robust advance of 20.9% over the past year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 39.3%, equating to an annualized rate of 11.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Turkey, France, and Poland were among the largest suppliers of whey to the MENA region in value terms. Turkey accounted for 24.5% of imports, France for 19.0%, and Poland for 5.7%, but even together they represented just 49.2% of total imports, indicating a broadly diversified partner base.
