The whey market in Iran experienced a period of rapid expansion between 2018 and 2020. Starting from 7,827 t in 2018, market volume surged by 59% to 12,490 t in 2019 and grew a further 46% to reach 18,187 t in 2020, more than doubling in size over this two-year span.

Following the 2020 peak, the market volume contracted slightly by 5% to 17,223 t in 2021. Growth resumed at a much more moderate pace thereafter, with the market increasing by 2% to 17,653 t in 2022 and by another 3% to 18,132 t in 2023, indicating a phase of stabilization after the earlier boom.

Whey production in Iran has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Iran produced 13 thousand tons of whey, marking a 39.6% gain compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 8.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 7 thousand tons, which also saw the largest decline of 41.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan formed the core of Iran's whey exports in kind. Pakistan accounted for 59.3% of exports, Afghanistan for 19.2%, and Uzbekistan for 11.8%, together representing 90.3% of total flows.
