The wheat starch market in Eastern Africa showed significant movement between 2018 and 2023. After maintaining a level near 39 500 tonnes in 2018 and 2019, market volume expanded markedly to over 44 600 tonnes in 2020.

This growth proved temporary, as the market entered a phase of contraction from 2021 onward. Volume fell to approximately 38 900 tonnes in 2021, then to 34 800 tonnes in 2022, and further to around 28 700 tonnes in 2023, representing a decline of more than one-third from the 2020 peak.

Eastern Africa's wheat starch production rebounded after a two-year decline. In 2020, the region produced 44 307 tonnes of wheat starch, marking a 13.6% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 2.1%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 0.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 38 992 tonnes, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 with a 9.5% decrease.

The data shows irregular fluctuations, pointing to a volatile market environment. Eastern Africa's wheat starch exports peaked in 2017 and then fell to their lowest point in 2018, with a staggering 325-fold difference between these years. From 2017 to 2020, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Italy were the top destinations for Eastern Africa's wheat starch exports by volume. The United States accounted for 47.3% of exports, followed by the United Arab Emirates at 12.1%, and Italy at 2.4%. Together, these three countries made up 61.8% of total export flows.

The market displayed an unstable trend throughout the period. Exports reached their highest point in 2017 and their lowest in 2019, with a 51-fold difference between these years. Between 2017 and 2020, the United States, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates were the leading markets for Eastern Africa's wheat starch exports by value. The United States dominated with 60.4% of export value, followed by Norway at 1.6%, and the United Arab Emirates at 1.5%.
