The wheat starch market in Eastern Africa showed significant movement between 2018 and 2023. After maintaining a level near 39 500 tonnes in 2018 and 2019, market volume expanded markedly to over 44 600 tonnes in 2020.
This growth proved temporary, as the market entered a phase of contraction from 2021 onward. Volume fell to approximately 38 900 tonnes in 2021, then to 34 800 tonnes in 2022, and further to around 28 700 tonnes in 2023, representing a decline of more than one-third from the 2020 peak.
