The Portuguese market for wheat bran, sharps, and residues saw the introduction of an innovative product in 2018 with biodegradable disposable tableware made from wheat bran, manufactured by Biotrem and distributed by Soditud. This new application likely supported demand, contributing to a market volume increase to 221.5 thousand tonnes in 2019. The market then contracted to 210.0 thousand tonnes in 2020.

From 2021 onward, Portugal's heavy dependence on wheat imports, with a self-sufficiency rate below 10%, became a defining factor. Forecasts of lower wheat productivity in 2022 due to rising input costs and adverse weather, alongside an 8% reduction in planted area, tightened supply. The war in Ukraine in 2022 sharply increased international wheat prices and trade imbalance, putting pressure on the food industry and causing significant price volatility. These conditions helped keep the physical market volume relatively stable between 211.9 and 212.7 thousand tonnes from 2021 to 2023, before it rose to 216.6 thousand tonnes in 2024. In value terms, the market surged to $64.3 million in 2022 but fell to $46.5 million by 2024, reflecting the raw material price swings.
