The Hungarian wheat bran, sharps and residues market grew from 187 700 tonnes in 2018 to 214 500 tonnes in 2019, supported by expanding wheat cultivation areas and rising consumer health awareness which boosted demand. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused global supply chain disruptions, leading to a slight market contraction to 211 100 tonnes despite sustained interest in nutritious by-products.

Market volume recovered to 223 600 tonnes in 2021 as technological advancements in the milling industry enhanced production efficiency and bran-based products gained stronger footholds in animal feed and food applications. A further surge to 271 100 tonnes occurred in 2022, driven by continued expansion of cereal crop areas and global grain price fluctuations affecting supply logistics.

After a dip to 233 100 tonnes in 2023, the market rebounded to 277 300 tonnes in 2024, indicating overall growth across the full period from 2018 to 2024.

In Hungary, the output value of wheat bran, sharps, and residues reached 48 273 thousand US dollars in 2021, marking a 48.2% increase compared to 2020. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, production grew by 50%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 14.5%. The most significant decline occurred in 2020, with a drop of 5.3%.

Hungary has seen wheat bran, sharps, and residues production rise for the third consecutive year. In 2021, the country produced 290.0 thousand tonnes, up 1.1% from 2020. From 2018 to 2021, production increased by 12.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.0%.

In 2021, Hungary's exports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues totaled 71 506 tonnes, representing an 11.4% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports fell by 6.4%, with a compound annual decline of 2.2%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 71 075 tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2020 with 80 691 tonnes. The largest year-on-year increase was in 2020, at 13.5%.

From 2018 to 2021, Romania, Poland, and Bosnia and Herzegovina remained the top buyers of Hungarian wheat bran, sharps, and residues in volume terms. Romania accounted for 53.4% of exports, Poland for 17.7%, and Bosnia and Herzegovina for 9.9%, collectively making up 81.0% of total export volumes.

Hungary's export value of wheat bran, sharps, and residues has increased for the second year in a row. In 2021, exports amounted to 11 372 thousand US dollars, a 31.2% rise compared to 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, export value grew by 22.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.0%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 8 428 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 9.1%.

In value terms from 2018 to 2021, Romania, Poland, and Bosnia and Herzegovina were the leading destinations for Hungarian exports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues. Romania held 54.9% of export value, Poland 16.3%, and Bosnia and Herzegovina 9.6%, together comprising 80.8% of total export flows.

Over the 2018-2021 period, imports decreased by 17.2%, equating to an annualized decline of 6.1%. The lowest import volume was in 2020 at 5 005 tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 6 378 tonnes. The largest drop occurred in 2020 with a 21.5% decrease, and the biggest rise was in 2019 at 4.8%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Slovakia was the dominant source for Hungary's imports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues in volume terms, accounting for 89.3% of total imports. Other markets contributed smaller shares, forming a long tail of minor partners.

Following a two-year decline, Hungary's import value of wheat bran, sharps, and residues rebounded in 2021. Imports totaled 1 286 thousand US dollars, showing a sharp increase of 44.6% compared to 2020. From 2018 to 2021, import value rose by 18.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 889 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 14.5%.

From 2018 to 2021, Slovakia and Austria were the primary sources for Hungary's imports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues in value terms. Together, they accounted for 94.0% of total import flows, with other partners making up the remainder.
