The market for wheat bran, sharps and residues in Montenegro is heavily reliant on imports, with domestic production remaining below 200 t annually. The regional supply landscape was altered in 2018 by the commissioning of Serbia's largest flour mill, Alapala, with a daily capacity of 300 t. This expansion in nearby milling capacity increased the availability of wheat by-products in the Balkans, which supported Montenegro's import volume, helping it reach 12,993 t in 2019 and contributing to a total market size of 13,150 t that year.

Market volume then dipped to 11,733 t in 2020 before recovering to 13,287 t in 2021. A consistent contraction followed, with the market size declining to 12,257 t in 2022 and further to 10,726 t in 2023. This period saw fluctuating import levels, which are the primary component of market volume, while domestic production varied between 62 t and 102 t.
