From 2018 to 2021, the Honduran market for wheat bran, sharps and residues contracted by 26%, falling from 42 101 metric tons to 31 200 metric tons. This decline coincided with a reduction in domestic production from 28 908 metric tons to 27 504 metric tons and a sharp drop in imports from 13 284 metric tons to 5 209 metric tons over the same period.

The market rebounded in 2022, reaching 39 908 metric tons, and continued to grow in 2023 to 43 697 metric tons, a 40% increase from the 2021 low. This recovery was driven by a surge in imports, which rose to 15 001 metric tons in 2022 and further to 17 554 metric tons in 2023, while production stabilized around 26 500 metric tons.

Honduras saw its production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues decline for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 27,696 tonnes, which was 3.2% lower than the previous year. Production peaked in 2018 at 28,908 tonnes, with the largest annual increase of 4.8% also occurring that year.

The market showed significant fluctuations during this period. In 2018, exports hit their lowest point at just 91 tonnes, but by 2020 they had surged to 1,414 tonnes—a 16-fold increase from the 2018 low. The 2020 figure represented a substantial 76.2% rise compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018, when exports dropped by 49.5%, while the biggest increase was in 2019, with a remarkable 784.4% growth.

From 2017 to 2020, the export market was highly concentrated, with El Salvador alone accounting for 90.9% of Honduras's total wheat bran, sharps, and residues exports in volume.

The market exhibited considerable volatility over these years. In 2018, export values reached their lowest point at $10,000, but by 2020 they had climbed to $315,000—a 32-fold difference. The 2020 value marked a dramatic 89.7% increase from 2019. The largest decline was in 2018, with a 51.1% drop, while the biggest increase occurred in 2019, soaring by 1,561.4%.

Throughout 2017–2020, El Salvador remained the dominant destination for Honduras's wheat bran, sharps, and residues exports in value terms, capturing 92.8% of the total.

Honduras experienced a second consecutive year of decline in wheat bran, sharps, and residues imports. In 2020, imports totaled 10,321 tonnes, down 8.0% from 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports grew by 16.2%, averaging an annual increase of 5.1%. The peak was in 2018 at 13,284 tonnes, with the largest annual increase of 49.6% also in 2018. The biggest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 15.6%.
