From 2018 to 2021, the ASEAN wheat and meslin market volume showed fluctuations, starting at 26.5 million tonnes in 2018, falling to 24.2 million tonnes in 2019, then gradually recovering to reach 27.6 million tonnes by 2021.

In 2022, the market contracted sharply to 23.6 million tonnes, coinciding with a global 16% spike in wheat and meslin flour prices due to agricultural commodity inflation, which dampened consumption. The following year, volume rebounded to 27.5 million tonnes as global export prices corrected downward by about 7.7%, stimulating demand. By 2024, import volumes remained elevated at 27.7 million tonnes, with trade dynamics continuing to adjust to lower price levels and regional partnerships such as between Singapore and Malaysia.

Exports wheat and meslin from ASEAN

Export volumes of wheat and meslin from ASEAN showed significant fluctuations during this period. The lowest point was recorded in 2018 at 16 K t, while volumes peaked in 2017, representing a 3.3-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports reached 46 K t, up 9.6% from the previous year. After two years of decline, ASEAN's wheat and meslin exports in value terms rebounded in 2020. The region exported 12 M $ US worth of these goods, a significant 12.3% increase year-over-year. However, over the full period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 2.5%, averaging an annual decline of 0.8%.
