Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh watermelons and melons in Vietnam expanded from 1.0 million tons in 2018 to a peak of 1.4 million tons in 2020, before contracting to 1.1 million tons in 2021 and recovering to 1.2 million tons by 2023. The initial growth coincided with a decline in exports, partly due to new packaging and transportation requirements for shipments to China introduced in 2019, which made export more challenging and increased domestic availability. The subsequent market contraction in 2021 reflected a drop in production, while exports regained momentum.

Export dynamics played a central role throughout the period, with China accounting for over 90% of watermelon exports. In late 2023, Vietnam signed an official export protocol with China, opening formal trade channels but imposing strict phytosanitary conditions that limited immediate export volumes. Despite strong export growth in early 2023, many domestic growers faced steep price declines and limited outlets by year-end, as Chinese purchasing slowed.
