Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh watermelons in Kyrgyzstan grew moderately from 218.7 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 230.2 thousand tons in 2020. This upward trend was interrupted in 2021 when the market volume fell sharply to 186.0 thousand tons, largely due to a significant drop in domestic production that year. A gradual recovery followed, with the market reaching 221.9 thousand tons by 2023.

The market's rebound in 2023 was primarily supported by a major increase in imports, which more than doubled to 23.3 thousand tons. Domestic production remained constrained by chronic challenges, including low crop yields caused by soil depletion, the use of poor-quality seeds, and a lack of watermelon varieties adapted to Kyrgyzstan's mountainous conditions. Concurrent shifts in regional trade, notably a sharp contraction of watermelon exports from Kazakhstan to several neighboring countries, may have indirectly affected import availability and flows within the Kyrgyz market.
