From 2018 to 2020, the watermelon market in French Polynesia shifted from 1 432 tonnes, beginning with the launch of a pilot greenhouse on Huahine Island designed to expand local watermelon and melon production for school canteens and markets. After a drop to 1 181 tonnes in 2019, the market stabilized in 2020 at 1 193 tonnes, a period when agricultural authorities released instructional videos to improve local cultivation techniques and promote farming knowledge.
The market volume rose to 1 271 tonnes in 2021 and then jumped sharply to 1 725 tonnes in 2022, driven largely by a surge in domestic production. This was followed by a contraction to 1 161 tonnes in 2023.
