The watermelon and melon market in French Polynesia began with industry development initiatives in 2018, including experimental farms and a pilot greenhouse on Huahine aimed at boosting local production. Despite this start, market volume declined over the next two years, falling from 1 876 tons in 2018 to 1 469 tons in 2020.

A recovery followed from 2021 to 2022, with market volume rising to 1 773 tons and then to 1 914 tons. In 2022, substantial import shipments, such as a 50-ton watermelon delivery to Huahine, indicated strong local demand that helped sustain market growth.

Market volume dropped sharply to 1 214 tons in 2023. During this year, the introduction of a digital publication for industrial property rights facilitated the protection of agricultural innovations, though it did not offset the short-term decline. Climatic variability noted in subsequent periods also played a role in affecting production and supply stability.
