The market for watermelons and melons in Cabo Verde fluctuated between 1 422 t and 2 013 t from 2018 to 2023, peaking in 2022 at 1 951 t. Domestic production and imports both contributed to these movements, with imports particularly volatile, falling to a low of 382 t in 2021 before recovering to 941 t in 2023.

Supply from Brazil, a key source, was shaped by climatic events, cost reductions, and investments. The El Niño phenomenon brought drought to Brazil's semi-arid region in 2023, creating favorable growing conditions for melons and watermelons, while lower costs for fertilizers, packaging, and maritime freight improved profitability. Earlier, in 2022, Brazilian investments in harvest, storage, and transport infrastructure helped maintain fruit quality for export markets, supporting the rebound in imports to Cabo Verde that year.

The local market structure in Cabo Verde involves challenges such as difficult distribution for domestic fruit, low internal consumption, and minimal processing. At the same time, major Brazilian exporters like Agricola Famosa expanded their planted area and targeted new markets, including Cabo Verde, influencing import availability. The company's acquisition of Spanish firm El Abuelo in 2024 reinforced its role as a leading supplier to the region.

Cabo Verde's production of watermelons and melons has increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 1 256 tonnes, which is 26.3% higher than the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 6.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 928 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 21.4%.

Following two years of growth, Cabo Verde's imports of watermelons and melons in kind declined. In 2020, imports amounted to approximately 411 tonnes, a decrease of 59.6% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports fell by 46.8%, with an average annual decline of 19.0%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 018 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 22.9%.

After rising for two years, Cabo Verde's imports of watermelons and melons in value terms dropped. In 2020, imports stood at 477 thousand US dollars, marking a 59.2% decline from 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports decreased by 53.4%, with an average annual reduction of 22.5%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 1 172 thousand US dollars, and the largest increase was in 2018 at 12.8%.
