Imports, which supplement local supply, generally decreased from 110.0 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 89.4 thousand tonnes in 2023, though with a slight increase in 2022. Export volumes remained modest, declining to a low of 7.0 thousand tonnes in 2021 before a partial recovery.

Trade data for 2024 and 2025 shows a continued upward trajectory for imports, reaching 126.8 thousand tonnes, alongside growing exports, indicating evolving international trade flows for watermelons and melons in Portugal.

Portugal's production of watermelons and melons has grown for the second year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 101 370 tonnes, marking a 5.2% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2018 to 2021, production rose by 8.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 69 590 tonnes, which represented a significant decline of 25.4% from the prior year. In contrast, 2020 saw the largest increase, with production jumping by 38.5%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Poland, Spain, and France were the primary destinations for Portugal's watermelon and melon exports by value.
