This expansion was supported by the modernization of the citrus sector in the Algarve region, where new cultivars such as 'Fina' and 'Nules' clementines, along with hybrids like 'Willking' and 'Fremont', were introduced. The adoption of vigorous rootstocks and improved grafting practices enhanced productivity and fruit quality, boosting local production to meet rising demand.

Market volume then moderated to 63 838 t in 2022, a year that saw growing market emphasis on fruit characteristics such as easy peeling and seedlessness. By 2023, volume rebounded to 65 033 t, coinciding with the implementation of European commercialisation regulations for horticultural products, which influenced packaging and labelling practices ahead of their full application in 2025.

In 2021, output was valued at 55 671 thousand US dollars, up 11.2% compared to the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, production value grew by 27.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.3%.

Portugal's exports of mandarins, clementines, tangelos, and citrus hybrids have risen for the second straight year. In 2021, export volume reached 20 928 tonnes, a 4.7% increase from 2020. However, over the 2018-2021 period, exports declined by 7.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.7%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 18 552 tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 18.3%. In contrast, 2020 experienced the biggest increase at 7.8%.

From 2018 to 2021, France, Spain, and Poland were the top destinations for Portugal's exports in kind. France accounted for 35.6% of exports, Spain for 33.9%, and Poland for 23.0%. Together, these three countries made up 92.5% of total export flows.

In 2021, exports amounted to 26 833 thousand US dollars, up 13.2% from 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, export value grew by 11.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.7%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 19 779 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 17.9%. In 2020, exports rebounded with the largest increase of 19.8%.
