The Romanian walnut market experienced a contraction from 2018 to 2020, with volume declining from 54 thousand tons to 46 thousand tons. This represented a drop of nearly 15%, establishing a low point before the trend reversed.

Market volume entered a sustained growth phase starting in 2021, expanding consistently over the following two years. By 2023, the market reached over 60 thousand tons, marking an increase of more than 30% from the 2020 trough and finishing the period approximately 11% larger than in 2018.

Romania's walnut production volume declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 48 350 tons of walnuts, marking a slight decrease of 2.5% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 5.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 54 000 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 17.9%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the most significant decline of 8.2%.

In 2020, the output of walnuts in Romania was valued at 260.7 million US dollars, showing minimal change from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production value decreased by 14.3%, translating to an annualized rate of 5.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 259.5 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 26.2%. The peak value occurred in 2018 at 351.6 million US dollars, with the largest increase of 15.6% that year.

Walnut exports from Romania increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 5 331 tons of walnuts, representing an 8.3% uptick compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 4.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.5%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 4 568 tons, which also experienced the largest decline of 10.4%.

During 2017-2020, France, the Netherlands, and Germany were significant buyers of walnuts from Romania, accounting for 17.7%, 14.2%, and 13.4% of exports in kind, respectively. However, their combined share reached only 45.3% of total exports, with the remaining 54.7% distributed among numerous other trading partners.

After a two-year decline, Romania's walnut exports in value terms increased. In 2020, exports amounted to 28 740 thousand US dollars, showing a solid rise of 11.6% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, however, exports decreased by 15.1%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 25 749 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 13.4%.

France, the Netherlands, and Germany accounted for 17.9%, 14.3%, and 13.9% of exports in value, respectively, but together they represented only 46.2% of total flows. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 15 607 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 1.4%.
