The market for mandarins, clementines, and related citrus hybrids in Iraq contracted by more than a third between 2018 and 2020, falling from 225.3 thousand tons to 151.1 thousand tons. This decline occurred against a backdrop of persistent agricultural challenges, including labor shortages, poor management, soil salinity, and rural-to-urban migration, which constrained domestic production. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further disrupted supply chains and import flows, contributing to the market's lowest point.

A partial recovery to 163.8 thousand tons was observed in 2021. That year saw the launch of an EU-funded project aimed at identifying agricultural crops and food products with high production and trade potential in Iraq, an initiative that likely provided support to the sector. The market volume, however, dipped again in 2022 to 143.5 thousand tons.

By 2023, the market had rebounded to 172.7 thousand tons, nearing its 2019 level. Imports in 2024 were recorded at 113.8 thousand tons, continuing the volatile pattern of supply that characterized the latter part of the period.

In 2020, the country produced 4 494 tonnes, marking a 7.8% increase compared to the previous year. In 2020, the country imported {value_last_year} thousand tonnes, a decrease of 13.7% year-over-year. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports dropped by 18.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -6.4%. The highest import volume was in 2018 at 222.3 thousand tonnes. In 2019, imports saw the sharpest decline of 23.6%, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a rise of 24.3%.

Following a two-year decline, Iraq's imports of mandarins, clementines, tangelos, and citrus hybrids in value terms rebounded in 2020. Imports reached 58 404 thousand US dollars, up 32.4% from the previous year. However, from 2017 to 2020, overall imports decreased by 13.2%, averaging an annual decline of 4.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 44 114 thousand US dollars, which also saw the steepest drop of 33.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey, Iran, and Kuwait were the main suppliers of mandarins, clementines, tangelos, and citrus hybrids to Iraq in value terms. Turkey led with 68.3% of imports, followed by Iran at 7.7% and Kuwait at 6.7%. Together, these three countries made up 82.7% of Iraq's total import value.
