Urea imports rose from $132.8 million US in 2018 to a peak of $509.0 million in 2022, before declining to $152.6 million in 2024. Exports followed a similar trajectory, increasing from $46.1 million in 2018 to $285.6 million in 2022, then falling to $73.5 million in 2024. Domestic production remained minimal, at $2.2 million in 2022 and stabilizing at $0.7 million in both 2023 and 2024.

The domestic urea market, measured as consumption, reached $225.6 million in 2022 but then contracted to $120.2 million in 2023 and further to $79.7 million in 2024. The decline in 2024 was driven by shifts in the global nitrogen fertilizer landscape, where Asia's growing dominance in production and consumption led to a relative decline in European markets, affecting Belgium.
