This strong export position was underpinned by significant state or large corporate involvement, which supported production capacity and influenced the overall market structure. The domestic market volume that year stood at 35 832 t.

The market contracted sharply to 20 732 t in 2019, a drop of 42% from the previous year. It recovered to 26 977 t by 2020 and reached 30 912 t in 2022. The market then stabilized at 29 788 t in 2023 before a slight increase to 30 264 t in 2024.

However, over the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 20.2%, with an average annual decline of 7.2%. In 2020, output totaled 23 120 tonnes, marking a significant 48.8% rise from the previous year. Despite this recent growth, production decreased by 3.1% overall between 2017 and 2020, translating to an average annual reduction of 1.1%. The lowest volume was in 2019 at 15 539 tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 26.6%.

In 2020, exports amounted to 22 400 tonnes, reflecting a dramatic 44.9% surge compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 20.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.5%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 14 804 tonnes, which also saw the sharpest decline of 20.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and South Korea were the primary markets for Belgium's exports of cyclanes, cyclenes, and cycloterpenes (excluding cyclohexane) in volume terms. Germany accounted for 21.7% of exports, the Netherlands for 20.5%, and South Korea for 13.4%. Together, these three countries represented 55.6% of total export flows.
