Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, production of uranium ores and concentrates in China remained stable at around 1 885 t per year. This stability was underpinned by substantial investments in uranium exploration and resource development, including the establishment of the first kiloton-level uranium mine in Xinjiang by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) and progress on other major production centers. Steady growth in the country's nuclear power sector, backed by policy support, maintained consistent demand for natural uranium.

In 2021, production fell to 1 600 t, reducing the market volume to 1 614 t. The following year, production partially recovered to 1 700 t, with the market volume reaching 1 704 t. This recovery coincided with the start of the National No.1 Uranium Demonstration project in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, which began operations using advanced digital technologies and in-situ leaching methods to enhance mining efficiency.

In 2023 and 2024, key developments included the full commissioning of the Ordos uranium production base, the addition of new nuclear reactors, and the imposition of a ban on imports of Russian low-enriched uranium from August 2024. These factors emphasized China's strategic focus on strengthening domestic uranium supply security and adapting to global market conditions.
