Earlier Report Observations

The domestic market for unroasted coffee in Peru grew from 108.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 172.6 thousand tons in 2021. This expansion was supported by the implementation of Peruvian technical standards for green coffee, which established quality requirements and improved commercialization. Low international prices in 2019 made exports less attractive, increasing coffee availability domestically. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 shifted consumption to homes, boosting demand for unroasted coffee for home roasting. In 2021, new technical guidelines for standardization of classification, storage, and labeling further strengthened the domestic supply chain and promotion of specialty coffee.

In 2022, the market contracted to 120.4 thousand tons as record exports, exceeding $1 224 million, and rising international prices due to global supply issues diverted a larger share of production abroad. However, in 2023, the market recovered to 162.4 thousand tons due to improved green coffee production and sustained growth in domestic consumption, fueled by the expansion of specialty cafes and a focus on traceability.

Throughout the period and into 2024, the industry focused on quality enhancement through technical standards, promotion of associativity among producers, and development of the specialty and organic coffee segments. Peru established itself as a leader in organic coffee, with growing demand in international markets. However, concerns about the implementation of EU anti-deforestation regulations in 2024 highlighted ongoing challenges for exports.
