Earlier Report Observations

The market for milled and broken rice in Peru showed variable performance from 2018 to 2021. After a contraction to 3.2 million tons in 2019, consumption recovered over the following two years, peaking at 3.5 million tons in 2021.

Subsequently, the market volume declined. The domestic milling industry, comprising around 600 mills with strong competition between the Jungle and Lambayeque regions, faced profitability pressures that influenced production. In 2023, a reduction in credit directed specifically to rice milling, which fell to USD 43.07 million, coincided with a further decrease in output.

Consumer preferences also shaped the market structure, with higher-income segments demanding packaged, long-grain white rice, while price remained the key driver for bulk purchases in lower-income segments. Key industry organizations, including the National Committee of Rice Producers and the Peruvian Rice Millers Association, were active in the sector.
