The unroasted coffee market in the Caribbean exhibited significant volatility from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 64 570 t in 2018, market volume contracted to 52 242 t by 2020. A recovery to 59 071 t followed in 2021, but the market dipped again to a low of 48 038 t in 2022. The most pronounced surge occurred in 2023, with market size reaching 70 299 t, the highest level in the period.

Movements in market volume were shaped by shifts in both domestic production and imports. Production rose from 35 914 t in 2019 to 49 345 t in 2023, contributing to market expansion. In contrast, imports fell substantially from 27 441 t in 2018 to only 6 970 t in 2022, weighing on overall volume, but a partial rebound to 23 158 t in 2023 supported the market's growth. Exports remained relatively steady at around 2 000 t to 3 000 t per year.

In 2020, Caribbean countries produced 36 925 tonnes of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee, marking a modest 2.8% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 4.7%, averaging 1.5% annually. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 9.3%, while the peak was in 2018 at 39 602 tonnes, representing a 12.3% increase that year.

Following two years of decline, unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee production in the Caribbean rebounded. In 2020, the output was valued at 386.9 million US dollars, up 3.1% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, however, production fell by 23.4%, with an average annual decline of 8.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 375.3 million US dollars, and the sharpest drop occurred in 2018, decreasing by 18.9%.

Exports unroasted, not decaffeinated coffee from Caribbean

In 2020, Caribbean exports of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee reached 2 429 tonnes, a 20.8% rise compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 span, exports increased by 23.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.3%. The highest volume was in 2018 at 2 474 tonnes, which saw a 25.9% increase, while the largest decline was in 2019, down 18.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, Belgium, and Germany were the top destinations for Caribbean unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee exports, together accounting for 60.2% of total export volume. Japan led with 24.8%, followed by Belgium at 22.7%, and Germany at 12.7%.

After two years of decline, Caribbean exports of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee increased in value. In 2020, exports totaled 25 453 thousand US dollars, a notable 21.2% year-over-year rise. However, over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 9.5%, with an average annual decline of 3.3%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 21 006 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest drop of 17.9%.

Caribbean imports of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 17 746 tonnes, down 24.0% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 21.5%, with an average annual decrease of 7.7%. The peak volume was in 2018 at 27 441 tonnes, which experienced a 21.4% increase that year.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam, Brazil, and Mexico were the main suppliers of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee to the Caribbean, together making up 66.9% of total import volume. Vietnam accounted for 29.1%, Brazil for 23.5%, and Mexico for 14.3%.

Caribbean imports of unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee decreased for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports amounted to 39 707 thousand US dollars, a sharp 27.9% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 span, imports declined by 37.6%, with an average annual decrease of 14.6%. The highest value was in 2018 at 71 843 thousand US dollars, which saw a 12.9% increase that year.
