From 2018, the Hungarian uncooked egg pasta market was influenced by tighter labeling rules introduced through amendments to the Food Code, which clearly defined terms such as 'egg pasta', 'fresh egg pasta', and 'wholemeal pasta' to improve consumer information, while state-owned companies and new players were present on the market. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 increased at-home consumption and demand for convenient products, including pasta, helping to restore market volume to 66 504 t after a dip the previous year. In 2021, despite a slight volume decrease to 65 795 t, market value rose to 86.7 million US dollars, supported by technological upgrades in production, such as new mill construction, and growing consumer interest in healthier and functional pasta varieties.

Further labeling regulation tightening in 2022, combined with a sharp rise in egg prices due to higher feed and labor costs, drove market value up to 106.1 million US dollars as volume expanded to 71 101 t, partly due to new market entrants and producer innovations offering pasta with higher egg content. In 2023, raw material price volatility, especially for eggs and flour, contributed to a volume drop to 61 287 t, while value increased to 121.6 million US dollars as demand shifted toward premium and specialized products like gluten-free pasta amid rising consumer awareness. By 2024, market volume stabilized at 61 194 t and value declined to 110.4 million US dollars, reflecting a correction after previous price surges.

Hungary's production of uncooked egg pasta increased in value for the second consecutive year. In 2021, output reached 92 609 thousand US dollars, marking a 7.7% rise compared to 2020. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 82 150 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 11.0%.

In 2021, Hungary produced 70 192 tonnes of uncooked egg pasta, showing a slight decline of 0.7% from 2020. Production peaked in 2020 at 70 709 tonnes, while the lowest level was in 2019 at 64 060 tonnes. The largest decrease occurred in 2019 with an 8.8% drop, followed by the biggest increase in 2020 at 10.4%.

Hungary's exports of uncooked egg pasta grew for the second year in a row. In 2021, exports totaled 5 398 tonnes, a modest increase of 5.0% over 2020. From 2018 to 2021, exports rose by 20.3%, averaging 6.4% annually. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 4 186 tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 6.7%. The most significant growth occurred in 2020 with a 22.8% surge.

Between 2018 and 2021, Romania, Slovakia, and Czechia were the top buyers of Hungarian uncooked egg pasta by volume. Romania accounted for 47.8% of exports, Slovakia for 23.7%, and Czechia for 5.1%, together making up 76.6% of total export volumes.

Hungary's export value of uncooked egg pasta increased for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports amounted to 8 006 thousand US dollars, a solid 10.5% rise from 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, export value grew by 25.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.8%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 5 850 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 8.4%. The biggest increase was in 2020 at 23.8%.

From 2018 to 2021, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine were the leading markets for Hungarian uncooked egg pasta by value, collectively accounting for 74.3% of total export value.

Imports uncooked egg pasta to Hungary

After two years of decline, Hungary's imports of uncooked egg pasta rebounded in 2021, reaching 1 001 tonnes, a 6.9% increase from 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, imports fell by 21.9%, averaging a 7.9% annual decrease. The lowest import volume was in 2020 at 936 tonnes, which also recorded the largest decline of 26.9%.

During 2018-2021, Italy, Czechia, and Austria were the main sources of uncooked egg pasta imports into Hungary by volume. Italy supplied 38.2% of imports, Czechia 16.5%, and Austria 13.8%, together representing 68.5% of total import volumes.

Following a two-year decrease, Hungary's import value of uncooked egg pasta rose in 2021 to 2 096 thousand US dollars, a 13.7% gain from 2020. From 2018 to 2021, import value declined by 11.8%, with an average annual decrease of 4.1%. The lowest value was in 2020 at 1 843 thousand US dollars, which experienced the largest drop of 18.9%.

From 2018 to 2021, Italy, Austria, and Czechia were the key sources of uncooked egg pasta imports into Hungary by value. Italy accounted for 42.1% of import value, Austria for 16.7%, and Czechia for 13.1%, together making up 71.9% of total import value.
