Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, turkey meat production in Tunisia grew steadily, reaching 95 345 tons, fueled by structural changes in the sector. The upcoming prohibition on live turkey sales prompted a shift to refrigerated meat distribution, while investment in modern abattoirs and processing facilities increased industrial output. Simultaneously, export demand rose sharply, with shipments jumping 55% between 2017 and 2019, further stimulating production.

After a contraction to 89 797 tons in 2021, which followed a period of lower export prices, production recovered to 93 648 tons by 2023. This rebound was supported by growing domestic consumption, which expanded from 10 500 to 13 000 tons of white meat per month. To control inflation, authorities set maximum prices for turkey cuts in 2023-2024 and required retailers to display prices clearly, ensuring stable supply amid rising food costs.
