Earlier Report Observations

The Tunisian sheep and goat meat market expanded consistently from 2018 to 2021, with total volume rising from 123.8 thousand tons to 142.2 thousand tons. This growth was entirely driven by increases in domestic production, which reached 142.2 thousand tons in 2021 while imports remained negligible.

After 2021, the market entered a decline, with volume falling to 141.4 thousand tons in 2022 and 137.8 thousand tons in 2023. The contraction was primarily caused by a prolonged drought that reduced pasture availability and a significant reduction in the national sheep and goat herd, which constrained local production. In September 2023, the government banned imports of frozen sheep meat, allowing only fresh, chilled, or vacuum-packed products, which altered import composition but had limited impact on total supply due to small import volumes.
