Earlier Report Observations

The Brazilian turkey meat market opened the period at 118.5 thousand tons in 2018 but was immediately constrained by a truckers' strike that hampered logistics and reduced slaughter volumes. This was exacerbated by BRF's suspension of slaughter at its Mineiros unit and production in Francisco Beltrão, while the Operation Carne Fraca scandal created additional export barriers, collectively pulling down production and keeping the market under pressure through 2020.

A turning point came in 2021 with the reopening of BRF's Francisco Beltrão plant, which helped stabilize production and fostered a recovery in export shipments. Nevertheless, the domestic market continued to contract due to the sector's long-term challenges, including the bird's higher susceptibility to disease, persistent international trade barriers, and intense competition from more affordable chicken and pork.

By 2023, a 17.6% surge in exports to 62.1 thousand tons was driven by new market opportunities in Europe and Africa. This strong external demand diverted supply away from the home market, accelerating its decline to 71.2 thousand tons, even as the sector benefited from the earlier reactivation of key processing capacity.
