The Austrian turkey meat market entered the period with the introduction of origin labeling for poultry in neighboring Germany from April 2018, enhancing transparency for consumers. Market volume experienced a slight dip in 2019 to 32 594 t before recovering through 2020 and 2021, reaching 37 733 t.

Domestic production capacity expanded in 2022, with output rising by 9% and self-sufficiency reaching 51%, directly contributing to market volume growth to 41 022 t. The following year, however, saw a contraction to 37 955 t as consumer demand for local turkey meat was constrained by higher prices and limited availability, while discount retailers continued to source cheaper imports.

Regulatory developments continued to shape the landscape, with new EU labeling rules for unpackaged meat taking effect in February 2024 and planned national minimum requirements for turkey housing, coinciding with a reported 6% increase in Austrian poultry production aimed at serving both domestic and export markets.

Austria's production of turkey meat and offal increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 16 421 tonnes, marking an 8.7% rise compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 3.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.1%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 13 700 tonnes, which represented the largest decline of 13.8% that year. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase of 10.2%.

Turkey meat and offal production in Austria increased in value for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 74 817 thousand US dollars, showing a modest rise of 6.4% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 16.3%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 5.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 60 830 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 5.4% that year. The largest increase occurred in 2019 with a 15.6% rise.

Austria's exports of turkey meat and offal declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totalled 8 370 tonnes, representing a solid decline of 11.1% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 39.9%, with an average annual decline rate of 15.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Hungary, and Switzerland led the structure of Austria's turkey meat and offal exports in volume terms. Germany accounted for 53.6% of exports, Hungary for 20.3%, and Switzerland for 8.4%. Together, these three countries represented 82.3% of total export flows.
