The 2023 contraction saw the market value decline to $1.653 billion, with production value following a similar trajectory from a high of $3.299 billion in 2022 down to $2.878 billion.

Italy maintained a positive trade balance throughout the period, with exports consistently outweighing imports. Export volumes fluctuated between 385 thousand tons and 478 thousand tons from 2020 to 2023, while import volumes saw a steady climb from 67 thousand tons to 96 thousand tons, indicating sustained international demand and evolving domestic supply dynamics.

France, Germany, and Switzerland were the top destinations, accounting for 22.4%, 14.6%, and 5.9% of exports, respectively. Together, they made up just 42.9% of total flows, while the remaining 57.1% was distributed among numerous other countries.
