Tomato production in Sudan began the period at 648.5 thousand tons in 2018, supported by major national irrigation projects such as Rahad and Gezira, which provide infrastructure for horticultural crops. Agricultural research conducted by the Sudanese Agricultural Research Corporation, responsible for over 95% of applied agricultural studies, also contributed to cultivation techniques and product diversity. However, output dipped to 628.8 thousand tons in 2019.

Production recovered to a peak of 651.4 thousand tons in 2020 before moderating to 642.9 thousand tons in 2021. The market then stabilized, with volumes hovering between 641.0 and 645.1 thousand tons in 2022 and 2023, indicating consistent domestic supply in the absence of international trade.
