Between 2018 and 2019, the market for dried shelled broad and horse beans in Sudan expanded from 180 thousand tons to nearly 200 thousand tons. This growth was supported by a rise in domestic production from 157 thousand tons to 165 thousand tons, alongside a significant increase in imports. The sector's dependence on rainfall distribution and traditional farming methods, with limited funding for modern equipment, contributed to the steady but moderate output growth.

Market volumes fluctuated from 2020 to 2023. After stabilizing at 199 thousand tons in 2020, the market contracted to 185 thousand tons in 2021 due to a sharp drop in imports to just 8 thousand tons. Domestic production, however, continued to grow, reaching 180 thousand tons by 2023. The market gradually recovered to 196 thousand tons in 2023, supported by rebounding imports.

In 2024, the Sudanese government implemented a ban on peanut exports to shift towards more lucrative processed products. Simultaneously, agricultural efforts in Al Qadarif state aimed to expand cultivated areas for legumes as part of initiatives to enhance food security. These developments occurred alongside increased imports of high-quality Egyptian beans.
