The tomato market in Serbia declined from 152.3 thousand tons in 2018 to 131.2 thousand tons in 2020. Extreme heat waves in 2018 significantly reduced tomato yields, while the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted supply chains. Increased consumer demand for local and healthy food during the pandemic helped stabilize consumption.

Market volume rebounded sharply to 164.2 thousand tons in 2021 and reached 169.2 thousand tons in 2022. This growth was driven by state subsidies for tomato producers and rising consumer preference for premium-quality varieties. The introduction of new food labeling regulations in March 2022 further standardized market conditions for fresh fruits and vegetables.

In 2023, the market contracted to 140.4 thousand tons, reflecting an adjustment from the previous year's peak.

Serbia's tomato production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 103.3 K t of tomatoes, which represents a 7.5% decrease compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 39.5%, with an average annual decline of 15.4%.

Serbia's tomato exports have fallen for the second year running. In 2020, exports reached 5 351 t, marking a sharp decline of 38.8% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 49.8%, which translates to an average annual drop of 20.5%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 11 454 t, with the largest increase that year at 7.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the three largest markets for Serbia's tomato exports in kind were Montenegro, Greece, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Together, they accounted for 79.1% of total export flows during this period.

Serbia's tomato exports have declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 2 890 K $ US, reflecting a steep fall of 44.7% compared to the prior year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 44.9%, with an average annual decline of 18.0%. The peak value was in 2018 at 6 356 K $ US, with the largest increase that year at 21.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Montenegro, Greece, and Bosnia and Herzegovina consistently led Serbia's tomato exports in value terms. Montenegro accounted for 37.5% of exports, Greece for 28.9%, and Bosnia and Herzegovina for 9.9%, together making up 76.2% of total export flows.
