Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the volume of the fresh tomato market in Morocco fluctuated, declining from 848 000 t in 2018 to a low of 648 000 t in 2022 before recovering to 785 000 t in 2023. These changes were closely tied to export dynamics, which were bolstered by government measures such as subsidies for market diversification and legislative support for agricultural exports.

The growth in exports, stimulated by the launch of a 750-dirham-per-tonne subsidy for shipments outside the EU and UK in 2022, contributed to a reduction in domestic volume as production could not keep pace with export demand. However, in 2023, an increase in production to 1 443 000 t, combined with a slight drop in exports, led to a recovery in the domestic market. The sharp rise in market value to $1 358 million in 2023 was driven by a significant increase in domestic prices due to higher energy and input costs.

Throughout the period, events such as the creation of the innovation platform Wenov in 2019 and the reactivation of the Franco-Moroccan fruit and vegetable committee in 2023 helped manage trade relations and standards. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had a limited impact on exports due to logistical proximity to Europe, allowing supplies to be maintained.
