The market volume for fresh tomatoes in Syria contracted sharply from 1 118 thousand tons in 2018 to just 609 thousand tons in 2022. This decline was driven by persistent economic and political challenges that undermined agricultural output, compounded by supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In 2021, extreme heat waves caused post-harvest losses of 15–30%, further reducing available domestic supply.

A partial recovery occurred in 2023, with the market growing to 777 thousand tons, after the government intervened to address temporary shortages and promote local production. Earlier, in 2022, consumer habits had shifted toward greater home consumption of fresh tomatoes and homemade juice, and exports to Gulf markets stopped due to falling domestic prices.

Throughout the period, price volatility linked to exchange rate fluctuations affected affordability, and new tax and customs policies introduced in late 2024 marked a change in the regulatory environment for agriculture. The overall market size remained primarily determined by domestic production, which faced repeated climatic and economic shocks.

Following a two-year decline, Syria's tomato production volume rebounded. In 2020, the country produced 781 thousand tonnes of tomatoes, marking a 1.2% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 33.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -12.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 772 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 28.5%.

Syria's tomato export volume grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 97 939 tonnes, reflecting a sharp year-over-year increase of 169.3%. Between 2017 and 2020, exports surged by 3 663.4%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 235.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the geographical distribution of tomato exports was dominated by Saudi Arabia, which accounted for 70.9% of total flows. Other trading partners held relatively minor shares.
