Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh tomatoes in Latvia experienced moderate growth in volume from 2018 to 2021, reaching 22 972 t, before entering a decline in 2022 and 2023. In value terms, the market expanded consistently throughout the period, rising from $30.7 million in 2018 to $40.8 million in 2023.

The volume contraction in 2022 was primarily driven by higher energy costs across Europe following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which reduced winter greenhouse production and altered consumer spending. As household budgets tightened, tomato consumption fell, pulling market volume down by 7% to 21 362 t.

Market volume continued to decrease in 2023, dropping to 20 469 t, while the value increased by 8.5% to $40.8 million, reflecting sustained price pressures and a shift toward higher-value imports. Import volumes remained stable, but rising export volumes further reduced domestic availability.
