Earlier Report Observations
The tomato market volume in Iceland showed considerable variation from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 2 759 tonnes in 2018, it declined to 2 698 tonnes in 2019 and fell further to 2 402 tonnes in 2020. A strong rebound occurred in 2021, lifting the market to 2 867 tonnes, the highest level in the period. This was followed by a drop to 2 726 tonnes in 2022 and a slight decrease to 2 680 tonnes in 2023.
These changes were primarily due to shifts in import volumes, which form the bulk of supply. Imports fell from 1 549 tonnes in 2018 to 1 261 tonnes in 2020, then jumped to 1 704 tonnes in 2021 before declining again to 1 321 tonnes in 2022 and recovering to 1 527 tonnes in 2023. Domestic production also varied, reaching a peak of 1 461 tonnes in 2022 but falling to 1 200 tonnes in 2023.
Import volumes for 2024 and 2025 are reported at 1 559 tonnes and 1 577 tonnes respectively, suggesting a continuation of the stable import trend seen in recent years, while exports remained minimal.
