From 2018 to 2020, the Iraqi tomato market expanded as domestic production surged from 468 thousand tons to 755 thousand tons. This growth occurred despite reported agricultural deterioration and economic hardships in 2018, which pressured local output and led to consumer complaints about scarce supply. During this period, imports steadily declined from 507 thousand tons to 319 thousand tons, contributing to a rise in total market volume to 1,073 thousand tons.

The market peaked in 2021 at 1,095 thousand tons, but a shift began as the opening of doors for external tomato imports that year weakened domestic producers due to poor marketing and water scarcity. Following this, both production and imports fell sharply; by 2023, production had dropped to 535 thousand tons and imports to 266 thousand tons, pulling the total market volume down to 801 thousand tons.

By 2024, the Iraqi government intervened directly, with the Ministry of Agriculture deciding to halt tomato imports for one month to stimulate local production and stabilize prices. This policy was part of broader efforts to raise daily output targets, implemented alongside challenges from climate change—including water shortages and high temperatures—which continued to constrain yields despite rising demand fueled by population growth and urbanization.

Iraq's tomato production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 754.8 thousand tons of tomatoes, marking a 21.8% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production surged by 510.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 82.8%.

Iraq's tomato imports fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 318.6 thousand tons, a significant drop of 24.1% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports declined by 31.8%, with an average annual decrease of 12.0%. The peak volume was recorded in 2018 at 506.7 thousand tons, which also saw the largest increase of 8.4%.

The highest value was in 2018 at 195.0 million US dollars, which experienced the largest increase of 54.1%, while 2019 saw the steepest decline of 19.3%.
