The market for dried shelled cow peas in Iraq showed significant volatility between 2018 and 2023. Volume grew from 5,100 t in 2018 to 5,635 t in 2019, then fell sharply to 3,676 t in 2020. A strong rebound followed in 2021, pushing the market to a high of 5,865 t, before another contraction occurred in 2022.

The decline in market volume to 4,232 t in 2022 was driven by two key events. A campaign by the Iraqi Interior Ministry against food traders disrupted supply and distribution channels. Simultaneously, a crisis in the exchange rate of the Iraqi dinar against the US dollar increased the cost of imported food, reducing consumer purchasing power and demand for dried cow peas. The market saw a modest recovery to 4,399 t in 2023.
