The Spanish testliner market showed considerable movement from 2018 to 2023. Market volume started at 1.29 million tons in 2018, dipped to 1.2 million tons the following year, and then surged by over 37% to 1.64 million tons in 2020. It reached a peak of nearly 1.8 million tons in 2021 before a moderate decline in 2022 brought it to 1.66 million tons. In value terms, the market followed a similar trajectory, rising from $841 million in 2018 to $1.3 billion in 2021 and then moderating to $1.19 billion in 2023.

A slight recovery occurred in 2023, with market volume increasing to 1.71 million tons. This growth was linked to a 1.5% expansion in Spain's corrugated paper segment, where testliner consumption notably rose. During this period, the packaging sector strengthened its dominant share to 69% of the segment, while graphic papers continued to contract in a context of declining global demand.

In 2020, Spain's testliner output was valued at 1 040 million US dollars, marking a 13.1% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 22.8%, which translates to an annualized rate of 7.1%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 7.4%, while the most significant increase was in 2018, at 17.2%.

Spain's testliner production volume rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 2 083 thousand tonnes of testliner, representing a substantial gain of 24.1% over 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production increased by 31.4%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 9.5%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 1 585 thousand tonnes, with no decline observed that year.

In 2020, Spain exported 597.7 thousand tonnes of testliner, reflecting a moderate year-over-year decline of 7.2%. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 25.6%, corresponding to an annualized rate of 7.9%. The minimum export volume was in 2018 at 456.0 thousand tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 643.8 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 41.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Algeria, Portugal, and Saudi Arabia remained the primary buyers of testliner from Spain, accounting for 33.7%, 16.4%, and 9.5% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, these three countries formed 59.7% of Spain's total testliner exports in volume terms.

After two years of growth, Spain's testliner export volume declined. In 2020, exports totaled 238.3 million US dollars, down by 16.4% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 4.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.4%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 285.2 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 13.3%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Algeria, Portugal, and Saudi Arabia were the principal destinations for Spain's testliner exports in value terms, contributing 35.1%, 18.5%, and 8.3%, respectively. Collectively, these countries accounted for 61.9% of total export flows.

Imports testliner to Spain

Following a two-year rise, Spain's testliner imports declined. In 2020, imports amounted to 152.7 thousand tonnes, which is 4.7% lower than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 span, imports increased by 14.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.7%. The maximum import volume was in 2019 at 160.2 thousand tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 17.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, France, and Portugal were the top contributors to Spain's testliner imports in kind, making up 34.6%, 30.1%, and 13.8% of the total, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 78.5% of all import flows in volume terms.

Spain's testliner import volume fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 74.5 million US dollars, corresponding to a significant decline of 14.6% compared to 2019. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 99.5 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 32.8%.
