Between 2018 and 2019, the Spanish self-adhesive paper and paperboard market volume increased from 90 thousand tons to 99.3 thousand tons. This growth was driven by significant investments in innovation and technological renewal within the paper industry, which allowed products to adapt to rising demand for eco-friendly packaging. The expansion of e-commerce and the substitution of plastics with paper-based materials stimulated consumption, particularly in the packaging segment.

In 2020, the market volume stabilized at 99.1 thousand tons, while regulatory changes promoting the circular economy facilitated the commercialization of recovered paper. Subsequently, in 2021 and 2022, the market surged to 134.6 thousand tons and 163.6 thousand tons, respectively. This sharp rise was linked to strengthened demand for sustainable packaging, reinforced by the approval of Royal Decree 1055/2022, which extended producer responsibility for packaging and promoted environmentally friendly materials.

By 2024, the market volume contracted to 127.2 thousand tons. This decline occurred against a backdrop of high energy costs, which represented a substantial portion of paper mill operating expenses, and raw material shortages. Economic uncertainty and an increase in sector insolvencies also affected production and consumption.

Spain's production of self-adhesive paper and paperboard in rolls or sheets has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output totaled 183.0 thousand tonnes, a 7.5% rise from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 15.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.0%. The lowest production level was in 2018 at 156.8 thousand tonnes, which saw a slight decline of 0.8%. This was followed by a significant rebound in 2019, with an 8.6% increase.

Spain's exports of self-adhesive paper and paperboard in rolls or sheets have risen for the second year running. In 2020, exports reached 130.9 thousand tonnes, up 10.9% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 16.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.1%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 110.8 thousand tonnes, which experienced a 1.7% decline.

From 2017 to 2020, Spain's exports of self-adhesive paper and paperboard in rolls or sheets were relatively diversified. France accounted for 25.9% of exports in volume, Italy for 10.5%, and Portugal for 9.8%. Together, these three countries represented 46.3% of total export flows.
