Earlier Report Observations
The tea market in Sub-Saharan Africa experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After a contraction in both volume and value in 2019, the market surged sharply in 2020 to reach 3.6 million tonnes and $8.7 billion. This peak was followed by a correction in 2021, with market volume settling at 3.1 million tonnes.
From 2022, evolving consumer preferences towards health-oriented and premium tea products supported market value, which grew to $8.3 billion even as volume stabilized. The implementation of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in 2023, which introduced tariff cuts on black tea, facilitated regional trade and contributed to a recovery in market volume to 3.2 million tonnes. Concurrently, escalating input costs and inflationary pressures influenced retail pricing and consumer behavior during this period.
