Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the market for tea in packings ≤3 kg in Indonesia experienced notable shifts. Starting at 133.4 thousand metric tons in 2018, the market was characterized by the dominant role of state-owned enterprises in exports and a growing consumer preference for tea bags, which diversified product offerings. A decline to 124.9 thousand metric tons followed in 2019, even as health awareness boosted interest in herbal teas for weight management. The market then rebounded to 138.0 thousand metric tons in 2020, driven by modern packaging innovations that emphasized safety and quality, alongside changing consumer behavior favoring new flavors and attractive packaging.

From 2021 onward, the market entered a period of sustained contraction. It fell to 131.8 thousand metric tons in 2021, a year that saw the implementation of new eco-friendly labeling and packaging regulations aimed at enhancing product appeal. The downward trend accelerated in 2022, with the market dropping to 121.5 thousand metric tons, influenced significantly by global supply chain disruptions and commodity price fluctuations that affected production and market access. By 2023, the market volume had decreased further to 114.6 thousand metric tons.
