Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2024, the Italian nonwovens market volume showed significant growth, rising from 215.2 thousand tons to 325.7 thousand tons despite some yearly fluctuations. A key driver was the increasing consumer demand for sustainable and ethically produced textile goods, which boosted the market in 2022 and supported later recovery. This shift in preferences aligned with the European Union's strategy for sustainable and circular textiles, encouraging innovation and the adoption of eco-friendly materials within the nonwovens sector.

Regulatory changes substantially shaped the market environment. The introduction of extended producer responsibility for textiles in 2020 and the mandatory separate collection of textile waste from January 2022 incentivized manufacturers to invest in circular production models and recycling technologies. Furthermore, new EU and national labeling rules, such as those defining terms like 'leather' and requiring transparency on animal-derived components, increased compliance costs but also fostered greater consumer trust and market differentiation for compliant products.

Global supply chain pressures from geopolitical tensions and energy crises affected raw material costs and competitiveness in 2022 and 2024. The industry responded by focusing on technological innovation and supply chain resilience, supported by Italian industrial policies. Investments in digital product passports and environmental labeling, as part of broader EU circular economy frameworks, continued to influence production strategies and market dynamics throughout the period.
