After two years of decline, taro production in Samoa rebounded in 2020. That year, Samoa produced 20 029 tonnes of taro, representing a significant 29.1% increase compared to 2019. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, overall production decreased by 13.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 4.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 15 519 tonnes, which also saw the largest year-on-year drop of 27.4%.

Exports taro from Samoa

In 2020, Samoa's taro exports amounted to 1 413 tonnes, showing a modest decline of 7.7% from the previous year. The lowest export volume during this period was in 2018 at 1 105 tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 1 530 tonnes. The most significant decrease was recorded in 2018 at 23.0%, whereas the largest increase happened in 2019 with a 38.5% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, New Zealand consistently remained the primary buyer of taro from Samoa, accounting for 84.4% of total exports in volume. The remaining exports were distributed among various other countries.

Taro export values from Samoa grew for the second consecutive year in 2020. That year, exports reached 2 588 thousand US dollars, marking a strong 20.0% increase compared to 2019. Over the entire 2017–2020 period, export values rose by 14.3%, averaging an annual growth rate of 4.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 547 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 31.7%. In contrast, the most substantial increase occurred in 2019 with a 39.4% jump.
