Earlier Report Observations

The Asian tomato market expanded from 2018 to 2021, with production increasing from 110.2 million tons to 113.1 million tons. This growth was primarily fueled by the widespread adoption of high-intensity cultivation and advanced farming techniques, such as indoor growing, which boosted yields. Concurrently, rising consumer awareness of nutritional benefits and stronger international demand for processed tomato products supported higher consumption and market volume.

In 2022, production declined to 112.2 million tons as adverse weather events, including heatwaves and pest infestations, reduced output. Post-harvest losses due to inadequate storage infrastructure further constrained supply, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by climate variability and logistical gaps in the region.

Market volume in kind eased slightly to 110.7 million tons in 2023, while market value fell sharply to 202.8 billion US dollars. This drop in value occurred amid reported factors such as continued demand growth and cultivation expansion, indicating that price dynamics or other market forces beyond production volume played a significant role.
